Week 1 Mary A Courageous Yes
Weekly Prayer
Father, thank You for faithfully working throughout every generation to bring Jesus into the world. Give me courage to trust You when I cannot see the entire plan. Help me bring You my honest questions, surrender my plans, and respond obediently when You lead me. May my life point others toward Jesus. Amen.
Day 1 Part of a Greater Story
Read: Matthew 1:1-17 | Also Read: Genesis 12:1-3
Open-Ended Reflection: How does seeing God's faithfulness across generations strengthen your trust in Him?
Learn from Scripture: Matthew's genealogy reveals that the birth of Jesus was not an isolated event. God had been working through generations to fulfill His promise of redemption. Every person in the genealogy had a story. Some demonstrated remarkable faith, while others made painful mistakes. Yet human failure could not prevent God from accomplishing His purposes. Mary became part of this greater story, and our lives are also part of what God is doing today. How might seeing both faithfulness and failure in Jesus' family line reshape the way you understand God's ability to work through your own story?
Journal Prompt: Record the names of people who have influenced your faith. How has their faithfulness affected your life?
Day 2 A Courageous Yes
Read: Luke 1:26-38 | Also Read: Isaiah 7:14
Open-Ended Reflection: What might make it difficult for you to say yes to God?
Learn from Scripture: God met Mary in Nazareth, an ordinary place that others often overlooked. Her surroundings did not limit what God could accomplish through her. Mary did not receive every detail about what was ahead. She asked an honest question and then chose to trust God. Her response reminds us that faith is not having every answer. Faith is trusting God enough to obey. What would obedience look like if you trusted God's character even without knowing the outcome?
Journal Prompt: Describe one area of your life that you need to surrender to God.
Day 3 Encouraged in Community
Read: Luke 1:39-45 | Also Read: Hebrews 10:24-25
Open-Ended Reflection: Who has encouraged you during an uncertain or important season?
Learn from Scripture: After receiving the angel's message, Mary went to see Elizabeth. Elizabeth recognized what God was doing and spoke words of blessing and encouragement over Mary. God often strengthens us through other people. We need relationships where our faith can be encouraged, our questions can be shared, and God's work can be recognized. Mary did not have to walk through this life-changing season alone. What kind of community helps you recognize God's work, and how can you help create that kind of community for others?
Journal Prompt: Write the name of someone who may need encouragement. What specific words could you share?
Day 4 Worship While You Wait
Read: Luke 1:46-55 | Also Read: 1 Samuel 2:1-10
Open-Ended Reflection: Which truth from Mary's song do you most need to remember today?
Learn from Scripture: Mary responded to God's promise with worship. Her song celebrated God's mercy, strength, justice, and faithfulness. She praised God before she had seen how every part of His promise would be fulfilled. Praise shifts our attention from the size of our circumstances to the faithfulness of our God. We can worship while we wait because God's character does not change. How might worship change the way you carry a promise that has not yet been fulfilled?
Journal Prompt: Write a short prayer of praise, naming three ways God has been faithful to you.
Day 5 The Promise Arrives
Read: Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:1-20 | Also Read: Galatians 4:4-5
Open-Ended Reflection: Where have you seen evidence of God's faithfulness during this season?
Learn from Scripture: Jesus' birth did not happen in comfortable or impressive surroundings. Yet God was fulfilling His promise at exactly the right time. The child named in Matthew's genealogy had arrived. Mary listened to the shepherds' testimony and treasured these things in her heart. Advent invites us to slow down and recognize that Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promise and the center of the story. What might you miss if you move too quickly through the ways God is fulfilling His promises around you?
Journal Prompt: Record something God has shown you this week that you want to remember.
